There are different types of vehicles that are manufactured in left-hand drive or LHD and right-hand drive or RHD configurations. This would refer to the placement of the driving seat and controls within the vehicle. Thus, the placement of steering wheel is opposite to the rule of the road, wherein left-hand traffic or LHT countries use RHD vehicles and right-hand traffic or RHT nations use LHD cars. The keep-left rule was originally adopted from the traditional way that ancient travellers somewhere in England would use when they took on the road during their time. Despite the fact that early motor vehicles position the driving seat at the centre, some car makers later chose to place it on the side closest to the kerb. This can help drivers avoid scraping walls, hedges, gutters and other obstacles. The pattern that eventually prevailed is the one that has a driving seat on the side closest to the centre of the road to give the driver the longest possible seeing distance in traffic. Nowadays, car manufacturers are experimenting drive by wire and brake by wire vehicles that allow the driver to slide the steering wheel or brake controls from left to right with the gauges in the centre dashboard.
